Welcome

In 1931 the Institute of Government was founded by Albert Coates to provide educational, advisory, and research support for North Carolina's state and local governments. In 2001 the Institute became part of the newly created School of Government. Homes of the Institute/School of Government
The first Institute of Government building was constructed in 1939 at 223 Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. It is named for Albert and Gladys Coates and is still used by the University today.
In 1956 the Institute moved into the new Joseph Palmer Knapp Building, located at the eastern entrance to the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. Beginning in 1998, the Knapp Building underwent extensive renovation and expansion, and it was rededicated in 2004 as the Joseph Palmer Knapp-John Lassiter Sanders Building.
