This course serves as an introductory program for attorneys new to misdemeanor cases. Sessions focus on stops and searches, impaired driving, ethical issues in district court, sentencing and jail credit, probation violations, and other issues in misdemeanor cases. The program also provides instruction on client interviewing, negotiation, and trial skills, including a small group workshop on trial skills.

This course will be held on Tuesday, November 14th - Friday, November 17th. 

The registration for the 2023 Misdemeanor Defender Training is closed.  

At this time, all scholarships have been awarded.

Agenda: The agenda can be found here.

Format: This year’s training will be held in person at the School of Government.

Fee: The registration fee for private assigned counsel is $500. There is no fee for IDS state employees.

Scholarships: At this time, all scholarships have been awarded. 

CLE: The Misdemeanor Defender Training will offer approximately 20.25 hours of CLE credit, including one hour of ethics credit, and qualifies for NC State Bar criminal law specialization (pending State Bar approval).

Hotel Information:  A block of rooms is available at the Tru by Hilton Chapel Hill hotel (1742 Fordham Blvd Chapel Hill, NC ) for $109 plus tax. COVID Guidelines: UNC-Chapel Hill and the School of Government are required to follow the University’s Community Standards to help maintain a healthy and safe community. Masks are optional on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus (with exceptions in health care settings and Chapel Hill Transit). We will have masks available for anyone who prefers to wear one while in the building.
