Understanding Substance Use Disorder for District Court Judges

    This course is offered through the North Carolina Judicial College. This is a basic introduction to substance abuse in the courts. The course covers why judges need to know about substance abuse and the nature of substance use and the science behind it. It also addresses the opioid epidemic, treatment and services, and confidentiality laws. It will focus on substance abuse and how it comes up in delinquency and parenting cases. Instructors will assume that course participants have little or no expertise in the areas of alcohol or drug abuse related illnesses and treatment practices.

     

    This course qualifies for CJE credit. This is one of five courses required for juvenile certification and one of two courses required for judges new to a family court rotation in a family court district.
