NC Superior Court Judges

the survival guide: Superior court judges' trial

notebook

Over time, most judges develop their own trial notebooks - customized collections of documents needed close at hand.  This project started as an effort to help new judges build their trial notebooks by providing items that most judges would want in them.  We now think it a useful resource for all judges.

Some judges may opt to use this resource online only.  Others will print out the materials, in whole or part, keep them in a binder, and add other items based on individual needs.  The items are arranged here in four sections: Judicial Administration & General Matters, Criminal, Civil, and Evidence.  However, judges may print out and organize the materials in any way that is useful to them.

The items in bold text are ones a judge most likely will want to print and keep in a notebook.  Feel free, of course, to print any papers that will be useful to you.

A number of these materials were selected or prepared by Judges Ripley Rand and Allen Baddour.  We appreciate their hard work on this project.  Some of the items below were taken from the North Carolina Trial Judges' Bench Book, Superior Court (3rd Ed., Institute of Government, 1999), a publication that is out of print because it is dated.  Other portions of the bench book may be revised and added to this guide.

This resource is a work in progress and we plan to continue adding materials to it.  Send suggestions to Michael Crowell (crowellm@sog.unc.edu) or Jessica Smith (smithj@sog.unc.edu).
