  • david lawrence honored by nc league of municipalities

    Ellis Hankins, David Lawrence

    At the 2009 conference, the NC League of Municipalities presented Professor David Lawrence with its Distinguished Service Award. Lawrence (pictured with Ellis Hankins, NCLM executive director) was honored for his "in-depth knowledge and understanding of municipal law" and "many accomplishments over a distinguished 40-year career of public service to local government." Lawrence will retire from the School of Government at the end of this year.

    NC General Assembly

    The 2009 session of the General Assembly adjourned on August 11. During the session 2,767 bills were introduced, with 577 session laws and 33 joint resolutions enacted. Summaries of 2009 legislation of interest to local and state government officials can now be accessed online, by topic, with links to related resources including bulletins, course listings, and blog posts.

    John Sanders, Mayor Jerry Jones

    John Sanders was recently honored by the NC League of Municipalities with its Distinguished Service Award. He was cited for his "leadership of the Institute of Government" and "his teaching and scholarship that have strengthened public policy development in North Carolina." Sanders joined the Institute of Government faculty in 1956 and served as director for 24 years. The School's Knapp-Sanders building bears his name.

  • new state ethics legislation requires training for elected officials

    In 2009 the North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation that requires local governing boards to adopt a code of ethics and requires board members to receive ethics training. The School of Government has created a resource website that includes information about the new requirements and lists upcoming training opportunities.
