Supervisors in local government today face unique and complex challenges when working with others and serving their communities. This program provides newly promoted and veteran local government supervisors and front-line managers with the opportunity to better understand and practice basic supervision skills.
You will have the opportunity to:
- Understand your management style and make it more effective
- Gain an overview of management and supervisory roles and issues
- Diagnose problems and analyze difficult interpersonal situations
- Build teamwork and lead problem-solving efforts
- Address conflict and strengthen relationships with employees and coworkers
- Improve listening, communication, and coaching skills
- Appreciate what is means to work in the public sector and make a contribution to the community
Mid- to upper-level managers and supervisors in local governments or state agencies who have not had other significant training in management. The course is also open finance officers, and others who are preparing for the management component of their certification process.
Offers 30 hours of continuing education
This program fulfills part of the educational requirements for certification finance officers by the NC Governmental Finance Officers Association.
This program can be used as an elective course in the NCTCA Certification program

Instructors:
Richard R. McMahon is a clinical psychologist who specializes in human resource management and organizational development.
Rebecca L. Veazey is a former local government personnel director who consults with governments on human resource and other management and organizational issues.
Donna Warner is director of the School of Government's Local Elected Leaders Academy and provides leadership training for local government officials at every level.

Course participants who cancel their registration on or before October 22, 2012 will receive a full refund. Those who cancel on or before October 29, 2012 will receive a full refund, less a $50 cancellation fee. No refund will be made for cancellations made after October 29, 2012. All cancellations must be submitted in writing, as outlined in the School's cancellation policy.
