Smoking in Public Places Webinar On-Demand Series
In January 2010, a sweeping new statewide law governing smoking in public places went into effect. It prohibits smoking in most restaurants and bars and grants local government’s new authority to regulate smoking in many other public places. In an effort to get detailed implementation information about this new law out to local governments as quickly as possible; the School of Government collaborated with the Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch of the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health to develop a webinar series. The first three webinars were offered in the fall and winter of 2009 and were supported by grant funds awarded to the Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch.
In 2010, the School is again working with the Division of Public Health to offer two additional webinars. These new programs are designed to be more narrow in scope than the overview webinars offered last year. These will focus on two specific issues that have generated lots of questions since the law went into effect in January: (1) local enforcement of the statewide law and (2) local authority to further regulate smoking.
