"Race and the Criminal Justice System" provides an overview of racial inequality in North Carolina's history and criminal justice system. The discussion focuses on key court decisions and legislation, including the Racial Justice Act. Additional topics include underrepresentation of African Americans in jury composition and the role that race has played in the imposition of the death penalty. “Race and the Criminal Justice System” was presented in March 2011 as the third installment of our four-part 2011 Criminal Law “Lunchinar” Series.
