Introduction to Zoning in North Carolina

Introduction to Zoning in North Carolina is a week-long basic course for zoning administrators, planners, and inspectors. The course is designed to acquaint students with the legal frame-work in which zoning operates; to enable students to appreciate and develop regulatory standards and procedures for solving community planning problems; and to help students develop administrative skills useful in issuing permits, handling zoning amendments, and providing customer service.

SYLLABUS. The course will cover the following topics:

• The legal framework of zoning
• The nature of the zoning ordinance
• Organizing the administration of zoning
• Regulating problem land uses
• Interpreting the ordinance
• Amending the ordinance
• Issuing permits
• The zoning board of adjustment

Tentative Dates for future offerings:

1.  January 12-17, 2009

2.  February 2-6, 2009

Certification maintenance. Certification Maintenance (CM) credits for AICP members will be available for this course. The number of credits available will be established when the final course agenda is set.
