Introduction to Planning in North Carolina

Introduction to Planning is a short course offered for planners who are new to the profession or new to North Carolina. The course covers the legal, historical and political context for planning in the state; how state and local governments are organized for planning; an overview of development regulations; practical dimensions of planning at the city and county level; and resources available to assist planners. The course is usually offered once per year in the Fall.

Schedule. The course generally runs for three days. The class agenda from the November 2007 offering provides an indication of likely course coverage and schedules.

Location. The course is held at the Knapp-Sanders Building, School of Government in Chapel Hill.

Faculty. Instructors for the course are faculty members of the Institute of Government and other planning practitioners.

Application and enrollment. The application form will be posted here when it becomes available (usually several months prior to the offering). Priority is given to applicants who are NCAPA (the course co-sponsor) members at the time of application. Enrollment is limited, typically to classes of 40. Admission to all School of Government programs is without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability status, veteran status, or sexual orientation. If you need accommodation to participate in any School of Government program, please let us know. Notification regarding acceptance will be made by several weeks prior to the course. A complete agenda, advance reading assignments, parking and housing information will be enclosed with acceptance letters.

Registration fee. $260 in 2007 (2008 fee not yet set). The fee includes materials and coffee breaks (but not room or board) and two lunches.

Certification maintenance. Certification Maintenance (CM) credits for AICP members will be available for this course. The number of credits available will be established when the final course agenda is set.
