The Basic Economic Development Course at UNC Chapel Hill provides intensive instruction on the fundamentals of economic development practice. It is an introductory training course designed for economic development professionals employed by public, non-profit, or private development agencies and individuals new to the field. It is also appropriate for more experienced professionals seeking to update skills. The course is accredited by the International Economic Development Council and counts towards the CEcD certification for professional economic developers.
The Basic Course at UNC is a comprehensive educational experience that integrates theoretical and practical perspectives on economic development. The course provides economic development professionals with the background necessary for organizing, planning, and operating economic development activities and programs. It serves as the first step in a structured professional development program.
Modern methods of adult residential education are used to present basic concepts and engage participants to apply what they learn about the practice of economic development. The faculty is composed of experienced practitioners and scholars who are experts in a wide range of public and private economic development activities.

Location and Dates:
The course will take place on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill at the School of Government in the Knapp-Sanders Building on August 3-6, 2009. On-site check-in will take place from 11:30 – 1:00 pm on Monday, August 3, 2009. A box lunch will be available for your convenience. The course begins at 1:00 pm on Monday, August 3 and concludes at 4:30 pm on Thursday, August 6.
The Knapp-Sanders Building, which houses the School of Government, is located at the intersection of South Road/Hwy 54 and Country Club Road on the UNC campus in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Chapel Hill is accessible via Interstate Highways 40, 85, and 95 and the Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Accreditation
and Professional Development:
The Basic Economic Development Course at the University of North Carolina is accredited by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) http://www.iedconline.org and counts towards the CEcD certification for professional economic developers. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, participants will receive a course certificate and qualify for entrance to the Economic Development Institute and other IEDC courses for advanced training. Established in 2001 through the merger of the Council of Urban Economic Development (CUED) and the American Economic Development Association (AEDC), the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) http://www.iedconline.org is the largest membership association serving economic and community development professionals and those in allied fields. Registration
The registration fee for this course is $625. All training materials, breaks, breakfast and lunch are included in the fee.
Registraton for this course will be online. Payment is due with registration.

Refund Policy
Tuition refunds, less a $100.00 administrative fee, will be made to applicants who withdraw from the course before July 13, 2009. Notice of cancellation must be received in writing. A full refund will be made to any applicant we are unable to admit to the course.
If severe weather conditions, natural disasters, or other extenuating circumstances beyond the control of the parties affect course attendance, refunds, less the $50.00 processing fee, will be made to those who cannot attend only if attendance is less than 50% of registered participants. If the course is cancelled due to unforeseen and extreme circumstances, full refunds will be granted to all registered participants.

Scholarships:
A limited number of scholarships are available to the members of the North Carolina and Virginia Economic Developers Associations. Other participants are encouraged to contact their state’s economic development associations, regional economic development organizations for information on possible scholarships or tuition assistance that may be used to attend the Basic Economic Development Course at the University of North Carolina.

Attendance
Policy:
To obtain a certificate of completion and receive credit for the course, participants are required to attend all sessions. Sessions will be held Monday afternoon through Thursday afternoon. No excuses, other than health, business, or family emergencies, will be accepted.
