Results

The Consortium's impact map highlights the program's reach across the state. Specific results acheived include:

  • Training over 1,500 teachers, who will reach 250,000 students, on topics such as local government, classroom management, and the role of active citizens in our history. Participant evaluations include the following comments:

    “Thank you for providing more ways to engage students in participating in becoming active, productive citizens. Thanks for the great plans and ideas. Every 8th grade teacher should attend!”

    "Thank you for a wonderful class! I could have sat for at least three days or more and learned from you!! You have many real and useable ideas that will help me be successful as a teacher this year and for the years to follow."

    “Probably the most beneficial, professional, well-run, and fun workshop I've attended.”

  • Distributing $607,000 to 101 grassroots civic education programs in 84 North Carolina counties through the Consortium's Small Grants program, funded by the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation.
  • Developing a Database of Civic Resources, which houses detailed lesson plans and civic projects for teachers and community leaders; the Database drew over 500,000 page views in the last year alone.
  • The NC Civic Index, the nation’s first-ever study of youth and adult civic engagement, was release in 2003 and has served as a model for other states seeking to assess civic engagement.
