We the People of the State of North Carolina: Discovering the Relevance of NC's State Constitution Thursday, June 18, 2009 UNC-Chapel Hill's School of Government, Room 2403 State courts often look more to their state constitutions rather than the federal constitution when resolving legal disputes, and many of the most important rights with which we are endowed are granted by our state’s framing document. Yet, numerous students have little knowledge or understanding regarding the NC Constitution and its relevance to every North Carolinian, young and old. Join the Consortium for an interactive workshop featuring lesson plans on teaching the NC Constitution and related topics, as well as presentations from state constitution experts to broaden your content knowledge of this important document. Click here to read more about this training and access the registration form. ~ Good and Evil – The Last 100 Years A Seminar for Social Studies and Language Arts Teachers Sunday, June 21 - Friday, June 26 Hyde Hall, UNC-Chapel Hill THIS TRAINING IS FULL. The NC Civic Education Consortium and the Program in the Humanities & Human Values at UNC-Chapel Hill have partnered to offer teachers a unique week-long exploration of the themes of good and evil throughout the last 100 years. Participants will explore topics such as war, terrorism, religion, the Holocaust, the Civil Rights movement, etc. and then learn pedagogical strategies for teaching these issues in the classroom. July 22, 12:00-7:30PM (includes baseball game) July 23, 8:30AM-2:30PM Kannapolis, NC FEATURING NEWLY DEVELOPED LESSONS! Every day, local government touches the lives of North Carolinians and provides the services essential for functional communities, growing businesses, and healthy families. Participants in this Seminar will learn first-hand the role of local government in North Carolina and then explore pedagogical strategies for teaching young people about how local government works. Highlights of the Seminar will include: meeting with elected and appointed local government officials, sharing boxed seats at the Kannapolis Intimidators baseball game with the Assistant City Manager, and touring local government facilities. Click here to read more about this training and access the registration form. ~ From Kelo to Romer: Telling the Story of US Supreme Court Cases Thursday, August 13, 2009 Duke University School of Law, Room 4055 Join Duke University School of Law and the NC Civic Education Consortium for a unique teacher training on the Supreme Court and its role in American society. Participants will receive 10 DVDs created by Duke Law’s Voices of America Law project, each covering a critical US Supreme Court case. These 20-minute documentaries, including interviews with the parties themselves, their lawyers, and the judges who shaped the case, expose students to the stories of the real people affected by the Court’s opinions. Participants will also receive an accompanying lesson plan for each DVD, designed for simple and immediate implementation in the Social Studies classroom.
