School of Government resources in health and human services include work in public health, social services, and mental health.

Faculty members in public health law focus on communicable disease control, environmental health (including regulation of wells, septic tanks, and food and lodging institutions), medical confidentiality (including HIPAA regulations), provisions of health services to immigrants, animal control, and other local health department governance and service delivery issues. The School is home to the Jail Health Law Project, funded by the NC Association of County Commissioners. This project offers assistance to local government officials on legal issues related to provision of health care in local jails.

In the area of social services law, faculty members teach, consult, and write for employees of the state's county-administered state-supervised social services system. Areas of expertise include social services law, responsibilities of county social services board members, child welfare law, guardianship law, child support law, and elder law.

The School's work in mental health law focuses on issues relating to the state's publicly funded system of mental health, developmental disabilities, and substance abuse services. Areas of focus include the mental health service system, involuntary commitment law and procedure, confidentiality, and clinical-legal issues.
