MPA Degree Requirements

Full-time MPA

The curriculum, designed to be completed in two years of full-time study, combines three essential components of professional development:

  1. A minimum of 54 semester hours of credit, consisting of rigorous core classes on the theory and practice of public management and elective courses from selected fields of interest. View a typical first and second year MPA course schedule.
  2. Completion of a summer-long management internship in a position with meaningful administrative responsibilities.
  3. Completion of an independent research project (Capstone) reported both in writing and orally to an audience of professionals.

Flex MPA

Flex students will take courses with other MPA students, but will be allowed to complete their studies on a part-time basis over as many as five years.

  1. Five years of responsible professional experience in local or state government
  2. Must meet all other admission requirements for the traditional MPA program

Flex students may count academic credit for two School of Government courses toward the required 54-hour total: Municipal and County Administration (four hours) and the Public Executive Leadership Academy (six hours), for an additional tuition charge.
