The Rothwell Scholarship is awarded each year to an outstanding student in the
Master of Public Administration program at the UNCĐChapel Hill School of Government.
As the premier award in the MPA Program, the Rothwell Scholarship
funds two full years of tuition and expenses.
The 2006 Rothwell Scholar is Ryan Ewalt. Prior
to entering the MPA Program, Ryan worked for
PricewaterhouseCoopers in the company's Washington
Federal Practice. Ryan earned a bachelorŐs degree in
systems engineering from the University of Virginia.
In the summer of 2002, he served as an intern in the
White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
In 2005, Doug and Sharon Rothwell began an endowment to support
graduate students at the School of Government. Their gift created the
largest annual scholarship in the School's history. The Rothwells are
both graduates of the UNC MPA Program, and Doug is a member of the
School of Government Foundation board.
Doug Rothwell is president of Detroit Renaissance, a private nonprofit
organization led by the cityŐs major corporate executives that focuses on
regional economic development. Previously he was a senior executive
for two Fortune 500 companies, and he served in the cabinet of three
governors. Sharon Rothwell is vice president of corporate affairs for
Masco Corporation, a leading manufacturer of brand-name home and
building products and services. She previously served as chief of staff to
Michigan Governor John Engler; director of labor relations for the state
of Michigan; and state personnel director for the state of Delaware. The
Rothwells live in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Rothwell Scholarship was
announced at the annual DeanŐs Dinner in November 2005. Doug and Sharon Rothwell (center) attended the dinner, along with former faculty member Donald Hayman and his wife, Mary Helen Hayman.
