Ian Mance joined the School of Government in May 2020. He works with the Public Defense Education group at the School to provide training and consultation to public defenders and other indigent defense lawyers on issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Previously, he worked for six years as a Staff Attorney at the Southern Coalition for Social Justice in Durham, where he led a number of the organization’s criminal justice policy efforts and represented individuals and organizations in criminal and civil rights matters, including cases involving use of force, stops and searches, prison and jail conditions, and wrongful death. He earned a BSCJ in criminal justice and MA in political science from Appalachian State University and a JD with Honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law.
