Joanna Carey Cleveland is an Adjunct Instructor with the School of Government, presenting on public personnel and anti-discrimination issues. She also is an Adjunct Professor at the UNC School of Law where she teaches a seminar for second- and third-year students entitled “Legal Issues in Higher Education." Joanna serves as the Vice President for Legal Affairs and Deputy General Counsel at the University of North Carolina (UNC General Administration). She practices primarily in the areas of anti-discrimination, athletics, gifts and development, human resources, legislative affairs, litigation management, records management (including public records), student issues, and university policy development. She also coordinates externship and fellowship opportunities for law students and recent law graduates with the UNC Division of Legal Affairs.  Prior to joining UNC General Administration in 2014, Joanna spent nearly 20 years in the Office of University Counsel at UNC-Chapel Hill as an assistant university counsel and associate university counsel working in many of these same areas.  Joanna earned her BA, JD, and MPA, all from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
