Why Should Local Governments Participate?

Cities and counties profoundly influence quality of life in North Carolina (NC), whether in delivering clean water, maintaining safe sidewalks, or keeping citizens safe. How effectively these services are delivered depends on the quality of the local government workforce, requiring cities and counties to create workplaces that attract the best and brightest. Yet local government organizations are under continuous political and economic pressures that challenge their ability to do so.

The Local Government Workplaces Project seeks to provide NC cities and counties with external and internal resources for creating such workplaces. It will do so by generating cross-organizational data on key employee satisfaction measures; disseminating cutting-edge academic research to cities and counties about the design of effective public sector workplaces; and equipping NC cities and counties to conduct internal research for organizational development purposes.
