The Civil Commitment Conference is intended for attorneys representing respondents in civil commitment proceedings and addresses the challenges particular to this practice area. The 2009 conference focused on the importance of counsel in civil commitment proceedings, as well as collateral consequences, a legislative update, ethical dilemmas presented by representing respondents, and substance abuse and mental health commitments. Past conferences have focused on the determination of dangerousness, expunction, and basic evidence issues.
