Implementing the New Smoking Law

Beginning January 2, 2010, smoking laws in North Carolina will change dramatically. Smoking will be prohibited in most restaurants and bars and local governments will have new authority to regulate smoking in many other public places. Because local health departments will be on the front line when this new law is implemented, local health directors, other top public health administrators, and public health staff members need to understand the law and prepare for its implementation well in advance. In addition, attorneys representing local governments will need to understand the scope of this new statewide law and also be prepared to support their local government officials if they elect to move forward with a local smoking ordinance or board of health rule.

This webinar series is designed for three different audiences. The first webinar (September 18) targeted local health directors and administrators. The archive of the first webinar and all future webinars will be available at www.ncphlaw.unc.edu. The second webinar (October 29) will target LHD staff members who expect to be involved in any aspect of implementation, education and compliance. The third webinar (November 18) will target attorneys representing local governments.
