REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS

Registration for IDS State Employees ($0)

Registration for private assigned counsel ($585)

The registration deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 6. There is no onsite registration. 

Participants will use their own cases to develop a cohesive theory of defense at trial and to apply that theory through all stages of a criminal trial, including voir dire, opening and closing arguments, and direct and cross-examination. Attendees

This program is open to public defenders and, if space permits, private attorneys who perform a significant amount of appointed criminal work.

Credit

This program will offer approximately 29.75 hours of continuing legal education credit (general credit only) and qualifies for NC State Bar criminal law specialization credit.

Teaching methods

This program is comprised of plenary sessions and intensive small group workshops. Due to the interactive nature of the program, participants are expected to attend all sessions.

Site information

The Defender Trial School will be held at the UNC School of Government in Chapel Hill. See the Visitor Information page for directions and parking information.

The School of Government reserved a block of rooms at the Holiday Inn Express of Chapel Hill/Durham from Sunday, July 15 through Friday, July 20, 2012. Program participants and faculty members may pay a reduced nightly rate of $74 plus tax. To make your reservation online, visit www.hiexpress.com/chapelhillnc and use the group code DTS (all caps). To make your reservation by phone, call the hotel directly at 919.489.7555 and provide the name and dates of the program. You are responsible for making your own hotel reservation; the rooms are held on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline for the block rate is June 18, 2012.

Travel Reimbursement (State Employees Only): If you are an IDS state employee, your eligibility for travel reimbursement at the state rate is contingent upon state rules and regulations.  A customized travel expense allowance form, as well as a mileage chart from county seats to Chapel Hill, is posted here.  For all questions regarding travel reimbursement, please contact Patty Barbour - Accounts Payable Supervisor at IDS - at 919.890.1660.

Cancellation policy

Course participants who cancel their registration on or before July 2, 2012 will receive a full refund. Those who cancel on or before July 9, 2012 will receive a full refund, less a $25 cancellation fee. No refund will be made for cancellations made after July 9, 2012. All cancellations must be submitted in writing, as outlined in the School's cancellation policy.
