New Misdemeanor Defender Training
September 18-21, 2012
This class serves as an introductory program for attorneys new to misdemeanor cases. Sessions focus on stops and searches, impaired driving, sentencing and jail credit, probation violations, and other issues in misdemeanor cases. Participants also work on interviewing, negotiating, and bench trial skills through role play and small group work, and engage in a discussion with prison inmates about the role of counsel and attorney-client relationships. This training is intended for public defenders and private attorneys who perform a significant amount of appointed work.
This program is comprised of plenary sessions and intensive small group workshops. Due to the interactive nature of the program, participants are expected to attend all sessions.

The School of Government reserved a block of rooms at the Holiday Inn Express of Chapel Hill/Durham from Tuesday, September 17 through Friday, September 21, 2012. Program participants and faculty may pay a reduced nightly rate of $74 plus tax. To make your reservation online, visit www.hiexpress.com/chapelhillnc and use the group code NAM (all caps). To make your reservation by phone, call the hotel directly at 919.489.7555 and provide the name and dates of the program. You are responsible for making your own hotel reservation; the rooms are held on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline for the block rate is August 27, 2012.
Course participants who cancel their registration on or before September 4, 2012 will receive a full refund. Those who cancel on or before September 11, 2012 will receive a full refund, less a $25 cancellation fee. No refund will be made for cancellations made after September 11, 2012. All cancellations must be submitted in writing, as outlined in the School's cancellation policy.
