New Misdemeanor Defender Training

September 18-21, 2012

This class serves as an introductory program for attorneys new to misdemeanor cases. Sessions focus on stops and searches, impaired driving, sentencing and jail credit, probation violations, and other issues in misdemeanor cases. Participants also work on interviewing, negotiating, and bench trial skills through role play and small group work, and engage in a discussion with prison inmates about the role of counsel and attorney-client relationships. Attendees

This training is intended for public defenders and private attorneys who perform a significant amount of appointed work.

Teaching methods

This program is comprised of plenary sessions and intensive small group workshops. Due to the interactive nature of the program, participants are expected to attend all sessions.

The New Misdemeanor Defender Training will be held at the UNC School of Government in Chapel Hill. See the Visitor Information page for directions and parking information.

The School of Government reserved a block of rooms at the Holiday Inn Express of Chapel Hill/Durham from Tuesday, September 17 through Friday, September 21, 2012. Cancellation policy

Course participants who cancel their registration on or before September 4, 2012 will receive a full refund. Those who cancel on or before September 11, 2012 will receive a full refund, less a $25 cancellation fee. No refund will be made for cancellations made after September 11, 2012. All cancellations must be submitted in writing, as outlined in the School's cancellation policy.
