Michael Crowell was a member of the faculty at the School of Government from 1970 to 1985 and again from 2007 to 2015. He served as executive director of North Carolina's Commission for the Future of Justice and the Courts, modernized the two-volume bench book for Superior Court judges by creating an online "survival guide," and spearheaded the creation of the Margaret Taylor Writing Award. Areas of expertise included judicial authority and administration, courts and judicial education, constitutional law, voting rights, and alcoholic beverage control law. He earned a JD cum laude from Harvard University.
