LFNC Fellow Alex Beddick Champions Community Service in Hyde County

Headshot of Alex Beddick

Alex Beddick's journey from a passionate environmental science student to a dedicated public servant in Hyde County is inspiring. Through an impactful opportunity provided by the Lead for North Carolina (LFNC) program, Beddick translated his academic knowledge into meaningful action while addressing critical issues in one of North Carolina's least populated counties.

Beddick's interest in environmental science was ignited during his high school years when he had an inspiring AP Environmental Science teacher. This early passion led him to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he majored in environmental science with a double major in public policy.

Beddick recalls learning about the LFNC program through guest speakers during his final semester at Carolina. “I thought, this is a path that would really help me grow,” he said. “This is an opportunity to help people in a more successful way given all the training and development that take place during the program.”

Upon graduating in May 2024, Beddick sought practical experience to bridge the gap between his academic knowledge and professional aspirations. The LFNC program emerged as the perfect opportunity, offering him a chance to immerse himself in the realities of local government.

Beddick's role in Hyde County, North Carolina, has been both challenging and rewarding. He has been actively involved in grant administration, working on projects that address critical issues such as home repairs, flood mitigation, and community development. One of Beddick's significant contributions has been his work with various grant programs, including the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program through FEMA, the Community Development Block Grant Neighborhood Revitalization Program through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Urgent Repair Program through the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency. These initiatives have allowed him to interact directly with homeowners, understanding their needs and helping residents navigate bureaucracy so they can secure funding for essential repairs and improvements.

Beddick has a deep sense of responsibility to give back to the community that has supported his education and development. “I feel like my education and my development have been subsidized in very impactful ways by the people of North Carolina,” said Beddick. “I feel I owe, or it is my responsibility to, give back some of what I have learned.”

He also acknowledges the challenges inherent in public service, such as navigating bureaucratic red tape and dealing with funding limitations. His commitment to service and his desire to make a positive impact keeps him focused and driven. Beddick's work in Hyde County has reinforced his belief in the importance of local government and the critical role it plays in addressing community needs.

Looking ahead, Beddick plans to continue his work in government or environmental conservation, gaining more professional experience before pursuing a law degree. His ultimate goal is to practice environmental law, leveraging his legal expertise to advocate for communities and protect natural resources.

Beddick's story is one of many compelling examples of how the LFNC program empowers young professionals to explore careers in local government and support communities across North Carolina.
