The School's Joseph Palmer Knapp Library contains one of the most comprehensive collections of North Carolina government materials in the state. Each year, thousands of public officials, students and faculty members seek out the resources of the library and consult its excellent staff.Â

The endowment was created by the late Henry Wilkins Lewis, director of the Institute of Government from 1973 to 1978, in recognition of the central importance of the library's resources and research services. Lewis served on the Institute's faculty for 32 years
