School to Co-Host Event Educating Undergraduate Women Students about Careers in Local Government

Engaging Local Government Leaders (ELGL), a national association founded by Carolina MPA alumni Kirsten and Kent Wyatt, will host a free event on Friday, March 2, to educate undergraduate women students about careers in local government. The event is co-hosted by the UNC School of Government, Carolina Center for Public Service, and the Carolina Women's Center and will include lunch, an afternoon of learning and networking, and a social hour.

“A local government career is extremely rewarding—you're making an immediate impact in a community, and there are jobs for virtually every major. From environmental science, to business, to communications, you can graduate from UNC with any degree and find a job at the local level,” said Kirsten Wyatt, ELGL co-founder and organizer of the event.

Speakers include representatives from the Towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro, the City of Durham, Chatham County, Orange County Water & Sewer Authority, and Aiken County, South Carolina. The presenting sponsor of the event is the Government Finance Officers Association.

In December 2017, ELGL announced the launch of a new program, “Inspiring Local Government Careers,” which is designed to introduce undergraduate students to local government careers. The association saw a need to encourage undergraduates to consider these careers in order to build the talent pipeline and build interest for MPA/MPP/MURP graduate programs.

The event for students at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will follow an event hosted at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon on February 16, 2018.

Visit elgloncampusunc.eventbrite.com for more information and to register. The event, located at the UNC School of Government, is free for students, but an RSVP is required.
