Introduction to Employee Benefits Law

Introduction to Employee Benefits Law is designed for those who are relatively new to responsibilities for administering employee benefits. The course focuses on what federal and state law requires of public employers with respect to employee benefits and what authority North Carolina government employers have in choosing, structuring, and changing benefits. Topics covered include retirement benefits, including those for law enforcement officers; health insurance benefits, including the Affordable Care Act’s current requirements, HIPAA nondiscrimination rules, reducing or eliminating retiree health insurance coverage and COBRA; employee wellness programs; paid time-off and income replacement benefits, as well as the ways in which employment law such as the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, FMLA and USERRA affect benefits.
