Introduction to Small Claims Court for Magistrates

    This course is designed for magistrates who are, or soon will be, holding small claims court, whether as a back-up civil magistrate or on a more regular basis. This course will provide a refresher of the legal principles often addressed in small claims cases as well as the rules of procedure. The course is skill-based, seeking to offer students instruction and practice in 1) correctly deciding small claims cases, and 2) acting as a judicial official in conducting small claims court (including consideration of the issues relating to judicial demeanor and dealing with attorneys in small claims court).

     

    The initial application deadline of March 25th has passed. You may still complete an application to be added to the course wait list.

    Attendees: This course is open to NC Magistrates presently holding or preparing to hold Small Claims Court.

    Introduction to Small Claims is a qualifying course in the Judicial College's Certification Program for Magistrates.
