Involuntary Commitment for Magistrates

This two-day North Carolina Judicial College course is intended for magistrates who issue custody and transportation orders in response to petitions for involuntary commitment. Topics will include identifying information relevant to the commitment decision, basic skills for interviewing and eliciting information, learning about mental illnesses, how to work with hospital emergency departments, making legal determinations related to mental illness and dangerousness, and properly implementing the decision to initiate the involuntary commitment process.

Involuntary Commitment for Magistrates is a qualifying course in the Judicial College's Certification Program for Magistrates.

This course will qualify for at least 10.0 hours of continuing education credit.
