42 U.S.C. § 405(c)(2)(C)(ii)
Parents are required to provide their Social Security numbers in connection with the registration of the birth of their child. Federal law, however, prohibits recording the parents’ Social Security numbers on the child’s birth certificate. State and local government agencies may use and disclose the parents’ Social Security numbers only as allowed by G.S. 143-64.60 or for purposes of administering the child support enforcement program.
