Knapp Library

The Joseph Palmer Knapp Library houses a large collection of material on state and local government, public administration, and management to support the School's instructional and research programs and the educational mission of the Master of Public Administration program. Reference and research services are available to all residents of North Carolina, and additional assistance is available to state and local government personnel, both elected and appointed.

The School of Government invites media representatives to cover two speeches on Thursday, Nov. 5, that are part of the School’s two-day 2015 Public Administration Conference which will be held at Knapp-Sanders Building.

Chancellor Carol L. Folt will deliver the keynote address that kicks-off the conference and former Environmental Protection Agency administrator and New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman will present the Deil S. Wright Lecture – “What is Leadership?” – during the conference.

Brief Speaker Biographies:

Carol L. Folt is the 11th chancellor and first woman leader of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. An internationally recognized scientist, award-winning teacher, and accomplished administrator, Folt is championing Carolina as a great global public research university. Her priorities include preserving and expanding the University’s academic excellence, access and affordability and deep commitment to the people of North Carolina. Folt leads the University in the national dialogue about higher education and has taken a strong position on protecting students from sexual assault. Folt came to Carolina from Dartmouth College, where she was interim president in 2012–2013, a professor of Biological Sciences and a faculty member.

Christine Todd Whitman is president of Whitman Strategy Group. Whitman served in the cabinet of President George W. Bush as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Previously, she was New Jersey’s first female governor. Whitman co-chairs Clean and Safe Energy (CASE) and serves on the Council on Foreign Relations. She is a member of Secretary of State John Kerry’s Foreign Affairs Policy Board, serves on the O’Connor Judicial Selection Advisory Committee and is a member of the advisory board of the Corporate Eco Forum and of the Joint Ocean Commission Initiative Leadership Council. Whitman earned a BA in government from Wheaton College.
