Paid Sick Leave Practices Across the Nation

Published for Human Capital Matters in Local Government on March 19, 2016.

A new study published in Review of Public Personnel Administration finds that paid sick leave is standard practice for local government organizations. Based on a survey of  HR directors in the 400 largest U.S. counties and cities, 90% offer paid sick leave and very few modified their sick leave practices during the recession. Most allow sick leave to be rolled over annually, cashed out at job’s end, and calculated in pensions. Paid sick leave practices appear to be determined by a range of factors, including government type, collective bargaining, and public hearings.
