Advanced Americans with Disabilities Act Course

The Advanced Americans with Disabilities Act class is an intensive, two-day program taking an in-depth look at ADA issues of particular concern to government and community college employers. The class is limited to 65.

Prerequisite: You must have completed Introduction to Public Employment Law as a prerequisite to attending the Advanced ADA class. NOTE: Public Employment Law Update and Introduction to Public Employment Law are different classes. If you have not taken Introduction to Public Employment Law, click here for the 2025 dates. 

The Advanced ADA course will focus on:

  • the meaning of “disability” after the ADAAA                      
  • how to determine whether an employee can perform essential job functions
  • what medical information and tests you can require of applicants
  • what medical information and tests you can require of current employees
  • reasonable accommodations and the interactive process
  • when service animals and emotional support animals must be allowed in the workplace
  • when schedule and shift changes and job reassignment are reasonable accommodations
  • dealing with behavioral issues caused by a disability
  • enforcing workplace policies when an employee has a disability.

The Advanced Americans with Disabilities Act class is appropriate for human resources professionals and anyone with human resources management responsibilities, city, county and agency attorneys, city and county managers, county social services and health directors, and senior law enforcement officers.

The class will offer 7 hours of CLE credit.

2024 Advanced ADA Agenda

 

Members of Civic Federal Credit Union (Civic) and Local Government Federal Credit Union (LGFCU), who are local government employees, are eligible to apply for a scholarship towards tuition for conferences, classes, and seminars offered by the School of Government. There are four deadlines to submit applications:

  • March 1 (for courses starting between April 1 and June 30)
  • June 1 (for courses starting between July 1 and September 30)
  • September 1 (for courses starting between October 1 and December 31)
  • December 1 (for courses starting between January 1 and March 31)
