Katie Loovis

Member, School of Government Foundation Board of Directors; Adjunct Instructor, UNC MPA Program

Katie Loovis is a member of the School of Government Foundation Board of Directors and serves as an adjunct instructor in the UNC Master of Public Administration program. She joined the UNC MPA faculty in 2021 and the Foundation Board of Directors in 2000.

Loovis's doctoral research is focused on public service management and leadership, and she teaches nonprofit management for MPA students. Her teaching philosophy is that she is a facilitator of her students' learning  journey. She helps students connect their personal and professional interests and goals to the course objectives and outcomes, and then encourages them to explore new concepts as she guides them through the learning process and motivates them to apply new knowledge and skills.

Her career in public service includes leadership and management roles in business (GSK), government (The White House), and the nonprofit sector (Achieving the Dream) as well as with the national and a local chamber of commerce, and now the NC Community Colleges Foundation where she serves as executive director. Her specialty is developing and directing meaningful, multi-sector partnerships that transform lives and improve communities.

Loovis serves on many nonprofit boards of directors, is currently the Vice Chair of the Board for 9/11 Day, on the SOG Foundation Board of Directors, and a Steering Committee Member for the Summer Careers Academy. Previously, she served on the boards or advisory boards of the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation Corporate Citizenship Center, Durham Tech Foundation, UNC Educational Foundation (Rams Club), the Small Business & Technology Development Center (SBTDC) for the Central Carolina Region (Chair), the Regional Partnership Workforce Development Board (Secretary), the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership, and the Orange County Local Reentry Council.

She earned a bachelor's degree and MPA from UNC-Chapel Hill and an Ed.D in Community College Leadership from North Carolina State University (expected 2024).
