Development Finance Initiative Wins National Recognition from Credit Union Association

Development Finance Initiative

The Development Finance Initiative (DFI), a part of the UNC School of Government and supported by the Local Government Federal Credit Union (LGFCU), has garnered recognition twice in the past year from the Credit Union National Association (CUNA). CUNA is a national trade organization that represents credit unions and their community service efforts in 50 states and Washington, D.C.

In March 2018, DFI won CUNA’s Excellence Award for Community Outreach. The award was celebrated at a ceremony at the organization’s annual Marketing & Business Development Council Conference. According to a news release from CUNA, “The Excellence Awards recognize outstanding new marketing and business development approaches with potential for universal application across the industry. A panel of judges selected winners based on strategy, process, application, and results.”

In September 2017, LGFCU was recognized for its support of DFI with the Dora Maxwell Award. This award for social responsibility and community service was celebrated at a gala in February 2018. According to the Carolinas Credit Union League, “The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award is given to a credit union or chapter/multiple credit union group for its social responsibility projects within the community.”

“It is wonderful to see LGFCU get this well-deserved recognition for its partnership with the School of Government,” said Tyler Mulligan, School of Government faculty member and DFI director. “For us in DFI, it is a privilege to do this important work for our communities, and we’re incredibly grateful that LGFCU made it possible and continues to support our work.”

The Development Finance Initiative was established in 2010, with generous support from Local Government Federal Credit Union, in response to requests from public officials for more assistance with public-private partnerships. DFI partners with local governments to attract private investment for transformative projects by providing specialized finance and development expertise.
