Post-Conviction Proceedings for Superior Court Judges

Registration is now open for the 2026 Post-Conviction Proceedings for Superior Court Judges course. Think entry of judgment ends a criminal case? Think again! Last offered in 2017, this course on postconviction proceedings, sponsored by the North Carolina Judicial College, is back by popular demand. Guided by a star-studded cast of experts in criminal law and procedure, judges taking this course will learn to recognize and navigate many issues that arise in criminal cases after judgment is entered. The course will cover Motions for Appropriate Relief (MARs), addressing both procedural and substantive issues, such as challenges to guilty pleas, sentencing errors, and ineffective assistance of counsel. The course will also cover sex offender proceedings, habeas corpus, and expunctions and certificates of relief.
