This two-part article provides basic information that individuals, families, health care providers, and policy makers in North Carolina can use to help guide decision making about medical treatment—including decisions both to provide and to withhold treatment—for persons who are no longer able to decide for themselves. Part One discusses common and constitutional law about health care decision making and the North Carolina statutory scheme for advance directives and end-of-life decisions.
