This course consists of two, week-long orientation sessions for new judges. These sessions provide training and orientation for newly apointed or elected District Court Judges. Participants focus on conducting criminal, civil, and juvenile court, including issues of ethics, and various substantive legal topics.
WHO MAY ATTEND
This course is open by invitation only to newly appointed or elected District Court Judges. For questions regarding registration, please contact Erica Carlisle, Program Manager, at ecarlisle@sog.unc.edu.

The course agenda will be provided directly to attendees by the program manager.
CONTINUING EDUCATION INFORMATION
Continuing Education Credits: This course qualifies for Continuing Judicial Education (CJE) hours. This course will also qualify for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) hours, pending approval by the North Carolina State Bar.
REQUIREMENTS
Attendance: New judges must attend both orientation sessions in full within one year of taking the bench.

MATERIALS
Printed program materials will be provided to attendees on-site. For judges appointed before the November 2026 election, your books will be shipped to you once you register. For judges who are not taking the bench until January 2027, your books will be provided for you when you arrive to the School of Government.
