North Carolina Pattern Jury Instructions are sample jury instructions organized by legal topic. Trial judges use them for particular cases based on the relevant law and facts, and share them with juries as guidance for reaching a decision in their cases. The instructions are created and compiled by The Pattern Jury Instruction Committee, made up of trial judges assisted by the School of Government and supported by the North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts. The Committee creates annual supplements, based on changes in statutory and case law.
The Committee may identify new or updated instructions that are too important to wait until annual supplements are distributed. Interim Instructions will be posted here. They will remain posted to the site until supplements that will include these instructions are available.

Corrections for the 2015 NC Pattern Jury Instructions Supplement Release
The School of Government discovered errors in the initial release of the 2015 pattern jury instruction supplements, which was sent in paper form to judges, prosecutors, and public defenders. The errors are not substantive but may cause confusion. They have been corrected on this website and in files shared with electronic publishers. Below are details about the corrections.
Criminal PJI 104.65 (Stipulations) is a new instruction. However, it was not noted as new with an asterisk on the supplement’s instruction sheet, and it was incorrectly dated in the instruction’s header as “REPLACEMENT JUNE 2015.” On the School’s website, and in all electronic materials, the header date has been corrected to “June 2015.” The substance of this instruction is not affected by the error or its correction. If you would like to print out these corrected pages for your hard copy volume, below are links to the instruction sheet and instruction 104.65.
Civil PJI 645.20 (Covenants not to Compete—Issue of the Existence of the Covenant) contains an incorrect date in its header of “REPLACEMENT JUNE 2014.” It should instead read “REPLACEMENT JUNE 2015.” On the School’s website, and in all electronic versions of the instructions, the header has been corrected. The substance of this instruction is not affected by the error or its correction. If you would like to print out this instruction’s corrected pages for your hard copy volume, below is a link to a PDF file.
