Faculty Member’s Unique Publication Garners National Recognition
June 26, 2018
In October 2017, the School of Government published its first graphic novel, In Prison: Serving a Felony Sentence in North Carolina, written by School faculty member James Markham and North Carolina Department of Public Safety employee Shane Tharrington, with illustrations by UNC School of Pharmacy graphic designer Jason Whitley. In May 2018, the American Library Association announced that the publication had been selected as a “document of distinction” by the Association’s Notable Government Documents Panel. The graphic novel was submitted to the panel by Denise J. Jones, State Publications Clearinghouse Liaison at the North Carolina Government and Heritage Library.Read More

On Friday, June 15, School of Government faculty member and ncIMPACT Director Anita Brown-Graham presented her research on workforce development to the myFutureNC Commission, a statewide initiative on educational attainment. UNC System President Margaret Spellings serves as co-chair of the Commission along with Dale Jenkins, chief executive officer of Medical Mutual Holdings, Inc., and Andrea Smith, chief administrative officer of Bank of America.Read More
Anita Brown-Graham Named Lifetime Champion for Fighting Poverty

This year faculty member and director of ncIMPACT Anita Brown-Graham was named a Lifetime Champion by the North Carolina Justice Center. The Justice Center presents its Defender of Justice Awards annually to honor individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions in combatting poverty. The Justice Center will recognize Brown-Graham and ten other individuals at a ceremony and dinner on June 8.Read More

Faculty member Carl Stenberg testified before a congressional task force on intergovernmental relations on May 17, 2018. The Speaker’s Task Force on Intergovernmental Affairs was created in May 2017 by House Speaker Paul Ryan and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi to examine ways to restore the balance of power between the federal government and states, tribes, and local governments.Read More

Justin Stirewalt: A Dedication to Public Service Runs in the Family

Justin Stirewalt’s grandfather, retired First Sergeant Robert C. Lawson, served in the North Carolina State Highway Patrol for nearly 30 years, from 1973 to 2001. Maureen Berner Studied European Approaches to Food Insecurity Through Foreign Exchange

In fall 2017, Professor of Public Administration and Government Maureen Berner traveled to Belgium to conduct research on food insecurity and poverty as a visiting scholar at Ghent University and its Centre for Global Studies. Berner also exchanged homes with University of Antwerp historian Maarten Van Ginderachter, who visited the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to work on his book and collaborate with faculty here in the United States.Read More
