Faculty Member Maureen Berner Challenges TEDx Audience to Find Solution for Childhood Hunger

On February 20, 2016, Maureen Berner addresssed an audience of 2,000 at TEDx WakeForestU. She challenged the audience to think of cihldhood hunger as a local economic development opportunity. According to Berner, the amount of available federal funding that is not being used to address this issue is critical not only to the children who are not being fed but to the future of North Carolina communities that could be left without a viable, educated, healthy workforce. UNC EFC Awarded Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation Grant to Support Programs in Rural North Carolina

Faculty Member John Rubin Honored by NC Commission on Indigent Defense Services

Faculty member John Rubin was recently honored by the North Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense Services (IDS), which has created a new training award in his name. The Professor John Rubin Award for Extraordinary Contributions to IDS Training Programs will honor individuals who volunteer their time and effort to serve as trainers and who have done outstanding work on training programs for attorneys who represent indigent persons.Read More

SERVICE Mural Celebrates African American History in North Carolina

The SERVICE mural at the UNC School of Government, created in 2010, honors the Greensboro Four. On February 1, 1960, these North Carolina A&T State University students launched a nonviolent sit-in movement that spread to 54 cities in nine states in protest of racial segregation. The mural also celebrates the contributions of dozens of African Americans to North Carolina.Read More
Faculty Member Charles Szypszak Honored with UNC Teaching Award

Following a rigorous selection process, Charles Szypszak has been awarded the prestigious 2016 J. Carlyle Sitterson Freshman Teaching Award for a seminar that he has taught to UNC freshmen for the past four years in the Political Science Department entitled “Thinking About Law." The course is offered to students considering a career in public service or law. This is the first time the award has been given to a faculty member outside of the College of Arts and Sciences. He will be recognized during a half-time ceremony at UNC’s basketball game on Sunday, February 14.Read More

The Warren Jake Wicker Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded annually to a high school senior who has been accepted by and will be attending UNC-Chapel Hill as a freshman in 2020. ICMA's Top 10 Articles Feature Work of Leisha DeHart-Davis

The editors of ICMA's Public Management magazine have posted a list of favorite articles in 2015, and faculty member Leisha DeHart-Davis' article, "Improving Grievance Policies: New Research Suggests it May be Time to Revamp," is among them. Dehart-Davis studied grievance policies in North Carolina local governments through surveys and interviews to understand policy designs, outcomes, and effectiveness. The article includes key findings (i.e. grievances are expensive) and ideas for more efffective policies. DeHart-Davis' research was funded by the Local Government Research Collaborative.Read More
